Zambian arrested in Ethiopia for wearing ivory

A Zambian woman has been arrested in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for wearing ivory bracelets.

Ruth Mwale aged 46 was arrested at Bole International Airport Tuesday morning upon her arrival from Bangkok, Thailand enroute to Zambia.

First Secretary for Press at the Zambian Embassy in Ethiopia Dorcas Chileshe told ZNBC News in a press statement on Tuesday that Ms Mwale becomes the second woman to be arrested in Ethiopia for wearing ivory bracelets.

And Zambia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia Albert Muchanga has cautioned Zambians travelling to that country not to carry processed ivory products to avoid being arrested.

Mr Muchanga says although wearing ivory bracelets is a symbol of cultural identity in Zambia, those travelling through Ethiopia must avoid carrying ivory products.

Last week a Zambian female student was arrested and fined six hundred United States Dollars for wearing ivory bracelets, in Ethiopia./ZNBC

  1. DONT DECIMATE ELEPHANTS OR ANY SPECIES ,GET THE MESSAGE LOUD AND CLEAR ESPECIALLY ZAMBIA.WILDLIFE IS A TREASURE HAVE SOME BRAINS

  2. It is illegal to be in possession of products made from Ethiopian declared endangered species. Persons en-route through Ethiopia, who do not need to declare entrance to the country by having a their passports stamped do not need to worry, i.e. though staying less than 6 hours in Airport departure lounge. Person’s en-route through Ethiopia and need to spend more than 6 hrs need to be checked into Hotel as it is a Ethiopian Airways policy. Such persons do need to have their passports stamped by the Ethiopians Immigration officers. They do need to declare such products if they have them, before entering. If they do not declare, such products may be confiscated, persons possession them also prosecution under Ethiopian Law.

In summary, if declaring entrance in Ethiopia, you should also declare the following

    1. Any foreign currency above $300 you may have
    2. Any products from Ethiopian declared endangered species. Telephoning the Ethiopian Embassy before travelling to that country, and stopping over for more than 6hrs is always recommended
If you do not declare, you risk getting prosecuted

  3. I can not understand this. What is wrong with wearing Zambian traditional bangles?
This woman was not caught trying to sell the bangles neither was she caught with Elephant tusks in her suitcase.
